New York City’s sixth Chinatown is growing in Little Neck, Grain House offers a Beijing-style menu with emphasis Sichuan and northern Chinese cuisine. For hot, get the “Yinbin burning noodles.”

This is a kosher grocery store that caters to Great Neck’s Persian population. While it offers a compelling array of dried and fresh produce, nuts, cheeses, and prepared foods, there is an unusual oven in the back lined with stones to make an flatbread known as sangak. It comes comes out of the oven like a giant ribbon, pocked by the hot stones, and sprinkled with black sesame seeds. The baker folds it between layers of paper and hands it to customers, the bread still steaming. It is remarkable and absolutely worth a stop. The shop will be closed on Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown.

This is the newer, fancier outpost of Umberto’s based in New Hyde Park that just opened this year. Owner Umberto Corteo opened his first pizzeria in 1965 and originally created the thin, square-shaped grandma pie for staff before others convinced him to start serving it to the public, too. Since then, the pie has spread to fans across the country.

It’s a fun local crowd at this packed burger spot with great cocktails, interesting ciders, and a solid list of craft beers. Go for the Villager burger with bacon, lettuce, and tomato jam, served with a side of admirable house-cut thick fries. There’s a late-night menu, too.

Northport is incredibly charming, with a waterfront view that can’t be beat. Tim’s Shipwreck is a slice of Americana, with dishes like cinnamon bun French toast or hot open sandwiches with meatloaf or pork loin. There’s a pavilion and a patio, so it’s not hard to find a seat.

A 2014 Stony Brook grad Yang Liu opened a Northern Chinese/Shenyang restaurant tucked away in a shopping center named for the acronym, as well as a reference to League of Legends. Set up a meal around the grill offerings, from small servings of enoki-wrapped beef, heart, or sausage, to charred scallions served like bicycle streamers. From there, look for the chalkboard specials and order as much as possible, which may include fried sardines or fried squid with cumin. The best bowl on the menu is the Northern hot pot with pork belly, eggplant, tofu skins, and green beans.

Owners Atsushi and Francesca Nakagawa met in college in Kyoto, married, and came back to her hometown to open Slurp Ramen last year. Get the signature ramen with a tonkotsu base, layered with chashu pork, garnished with a soft-boiled egg, fresh ginger, and scallions.
