At this Hell’s Kitchen bakery, which has been run by four generations of the same family, nothing is made by machine, including the flaky phyllo dough that goes into the bakery’s many pastries. As a nearly 100-year-old institution, Poseidon represents a bygone history of Hell’s Kitchen, one in which Greek-owned music shops, bakeries, and other businesses lined Ninth Avenue. Brigadeiro Bakery

Brazilian truffles are the name of the game at this Washington Square bakery, known for chocolatey South American treats. Chef Mariana Vieira launched the business from her apartment kitchen nearly ten years ago, and in 2014 the business blossomed into something worthy of a Soho storefront. The melt-in-your-mouth confections, traditionally made of condensed milk, cocoa powder, butter, and chocolate sprinkles are now available to order by the half dozen, dozen, and more on the bakery’s website.

Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop

A true blast from the past, this Greenpoint donut shop looks like an old fashioned sweets counter you’d find on an episode of I Love Lucy. For more than 60 years, this place has been cranking out the same light and flaky doughnuts served by girls dressed in the same green and pink dresses. Crullers, Bavarian cream- and jelly-filled donuts, along with different flavors of glazed and sprinkle-topped confections are just among a few of the baked goods available. Eileen Avezzano began making classic cheesecakes from her Soho bakery in 1975.
