Losing a long established neighborhood business, even temporarily, is always tough to swallow, but the outpouring of emotion for the temporary end to the Mars Bar is rather befuddling. Yes the bar was a reminder of what the East Village once was, and yes the bar was a haven for local artists and characters from the good old days before the yuppification of the neighborhood. But to be honest, it was also a dump. In fact, it was such a dump that it's safe to say that 99% of the people who are partaking in this outpouring of emotion probably never even went to the bar unless it was on a drunken dare or for a journalistic assignment (see here and here for example) because it was a little scary and a lot gross. It really seems to be the Elaine's of the bar world, in that it is much loved but never visited by the masses.
So while the bar will be missed by some, let's not pretend that its closing will knock the world off its axis. If all goes according to plan, the bar will have the chance reopen in a few years. In the meantime, here are some other bars you can visit that may not be as rank or shitty as Mars Bar, but will do the trick.Read More
