It’s happening again: COVID-19 case counts are rising, fueled by the highly transmissible delta variant. Last week, the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued new mask guidelines due to the case uptick; and on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio and NYC health officials said that they are now “strongly recommending” mask-wearing indoors in public settings, regardless of vaccination status, especially if there’s a possibility of interacting with unvaccinated individuals.
Amid the rise in COVID-19 cases, the city has been doubling down on vaccination efforts. City workers have to either be vaccinated or undergo weekly COVID-19 tests starting in September. Broadway theatergoers must present proof of vaccination in order to go to shows starting this week.
Restaurants and bars, too, are rolling out vaccine mandates. Some have been asking for proof of vaccination since NYC first rolled back its mask mandate months ago, but what started as a small group of outliers risking public backlash has quickly gained strength in numbers. Over the past week, a growing number of restaurants have instated vaccine requirements for diners, from high-end establishments like Le Bernardin to neighborhood favorites like Gertie and Yellow Rose. Below, Eater has compiled a list of restaurants and bars across the city that are now requiring proof of vaccination from diners. Be sure to check the fine print before you go: Some restaurants are only requiring proof of vaccination for indoor diners, some also accept recent negative COVID-19 tests, and others are requiring proof of vaccination plus mandatory mask-wearing while not eating or drinking.
Update, Tuesday, August 3, 11:20 a.m.: NYC mayor Bill de Blasio has announced that starting August 16, customers will be required to provide proof of vaccination in order to dine indoors at any restaurant and bar in the city. Eater will no longer be updating this list.
