Actor and ex-husband of Jennifer Aniston Justin Theroux is opening a new cocktail bar on the Lower East Side this week, in the same space where French hotspot Le Turtle once stood, he announced on Instagram.
“Hey New York City. Kuma and I are opening a bar with a couple friends called Ray’s. Because sometimes you wanna go where nobody knows your name,” Theroux writes in a photo where he’s posing with his dog Kuma in what appears to be a pool table inside the bar.
Ray’s opens Friday at 177 Chrystie St., near Rivington Street, where Le Turtle stood until it closed in January after a four-year run.
It seems the Le Turtle team, including Freemans’ Taavo Somer and the Smile’s Carlos Quirarte, are also partners at Ray’s. Somer, Quirarte, and Theroux are all tagged in a promotional photo posted onto Ray’s Instagram, as is Jon Neidich of the Happiest Hour and artist Matt McCormick. Quirarte has also added the bar’s website to his Instagram bio.
It wouldn’t be the first time the actor mingles with the crew: Back when Le Turtle opened a private dining room called Subturtle, Theroux was also involved in promoting it. And when Le Turtle was opened, it was known for being quite the hotspot.
Photos posted online show a Western-style, rustic decor. The bar will serve cocktails and beer, and will be open daily from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m.
