Michelin’s 2020 Cheaper Restaurants List Is Here

Cafe China loses its star, while Haenyeo, Maison Yaki, Saint Julivert, and Violet earn Bibs

The 2020 Michelin Bib Gourmands are here: Among this year’s biggest additions are Haenyeo, Jenny Kwak’s Korean brasserie in Park Slope; Maison Yaki, the French-Japanese skewer spot by the Olmsted team; and Win Son the impossibly packed Taiwanese hangout in East Williamsburg.

Ahead of its stars each year, Michelin publishes this “cheap eats” list, a selection of restaurants where diners can supposedly order two courses and a glass of wine for under $40. The Bibs, considered a mark of honor among some, are also viewed by others as a consolation prize, as these venues are, by default, ineligible for stars.

That’s what makes the appearance of Cafe China on this year’s Bib selections a bit of a surprise. Xian Zhang’s and Yiming Wang’s Sichuan restaurant has held a star since 2013 and was, as of last year’s list, the only starred Sichuan spot in New York.

Other new entrants to the Bibs include O:N°, the Korean hotpot venue by HAND Hospitality; Saint Julivert Fisherie, the global seafood restaurant by Eder Montero and Alex Raij; Violet, the Rhode Island-inspired pizzeria by the Emily empire; Van Đa, an East Village Vietnamese restaurant that received a nice Times review this summer; Atlas Kitchen, a Hunan restaurant near Columbia University; Chuan Tian Xia, a Sichuan venue in Sunset Park; and Sagara, serving up Sri Lankan fare on Staten Island.

This year, Lupa has also fallen off the Bibs. The Greenwich Village Roman spot was, until recently, owned by disgraced restaurateur Mario Batali, who was charged with indecent assault and battery in Boston.

Next week, Michelin’s anonymous inspectors will unveil their list of the city’s best restaurants, awarding one, two, or three stars to worthy venues.
