Critic highlights two outdoor dining spots
Embracing the season, the Post’s Steve Cuozzo recommends two new outdoor restaurants in the city for open-air revelry: the Garment District’s Elsie Roof and Pier 17’s Heineken Riverdeck. Named after the 20th century NYC actress Elsie de Wolfe, Elsie Roof has small dishes by David Burke like a grilled cheese with caviar. It overlooks Times Square and the rising Hudson Yards development, and cocktails are $18. Over on the waterfront, Heineken Riverdeck has snacks like a pizza bagel that Cuozzo calls “ridiculously good” and cocktails by Saxon + Parole alum Mark Murphy. Cuozzo recommends the bourbon punch, made with Jim Beam, citrus, and bitters.
Closings and coming attractions
On the Upper West Side, AG Kitchen at 269 Columbus Ave. closed after six years in business, and a post on Facebook notes that it will eventually reopen as a new concept. Also in the neighborhood, the gastropub known for its duck burger the Fat Monk at 949 Columbus Ave. shuttered after just over a year. The New Yorker previously praised the restaurant’s “unapologetically indulgent menu.” And after months of displaying “closed for renovation” signs, UWS desserts shop Tiny Treats Cafe at 616 Amsterdam Ave. is permanently closed, and the building is for rent.
Meanwhile, national pretzel chain Philly Pretzel Factory is plotting two new NYC locations in Harlem and Tribeca. There is already one located on Staten Island, and up to 25 outposts are planned for NYC. Also in Tribeca, a restaurant from the Yakiniku Futago team has applied for a liquor license at at 341 West Broadway.
Week-long beer festival celebrates women in brewing
Through August 12, bars throughout NYC are participating in Beer With(out) Beards, a craft beer festival spotlighting women in the industry. Tonight, there will be a talk with historians, academics, and a brewmaster about women in beer history held at the Mezzanine at 55 Broadway. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased here. As part of the festival, Clinton Hill bar Glorietta Baldy is also hosting a beer trivia event from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. tonight. The full schedule of events can be found here.
A pop-up in Southampton
Former music executive Robert Cummins is set to open Brooklyn Chop House in FiDi this September, but for the month of August, the restaurant is popping up poolside at the Capri Hotel at 281 County Rd. 39a in Southampton. A lunch menu of satays and dumplings is available as well as a full dinner menu featuring steaks and chops and other meaty entrees Wednesday through Saturday nights.
