Another H Mart is opening in Manhattan
Massive Asian supermarket chain H Mart will open a third NYC outpost in the vacant retail space of NYU’s Alumni Hall at 33 3rd Ave. Signage went up on the window of the defunct Birdbath as well as the Citi Habitats office, which both closed in summer 2014. H Mart is beloved for its wide array of Korean fare: produce, pantry items, goods, prepared foods, and more. There are already locations in Midtown East and the Upper West Side.
Critic praises the understated couscous of Kish-Kash
The New Yorker critic Hannah Goldfield checks out Einat Admony’s new restaurant Kish-Kash, where the Taïm chef/founder has moved from falafel to couscous. As for the actual couscous, Goldfield does compare it to “the supermarket stuff,” but writes: “But, then, couscous is not meant to stand out. It’s meant to be comfortingly bland and filling, an expansive, starchy pedestal for stretching a modest scoop of aggressively spiced meat or vegetable stew into a meal; a complete dish built around couscous is also called couscous.” The harissa, served on request with meals, Goldfield calls New York’s best.
SF grab-and-go shop is coming to NYC
The natural foods grab-and-go concept Proper Food is opening outside of San Francisco for the first time. In early September, FiDi will be home to a new Proper Food at 67 Wall St., overseen by executive chef Juan Muñoz, who has worked in San Francisco’s Michelin-starred Campton Place. The menu includes breakfast items, sandwiches, salads, soups, and seasonal chef’s specials.
The Breslin gets in on CBD hype
Next Thursday, August 16, the Breslin will team up with Rosebud CBD Oil for a CBD brownie and cocktail tasting in the Ace Hotel’s lobby bar. The gluten-free, CBD-laced brownie will be available alongside a cocktail called “The Rosebud,” made with Pommeau, grapefruit sauvage, bergamot, grapefruit juice, and CBD oil. Free samples will be available on a first-come basis. The event will take place from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., and reservations can be made here.
