A skimmer was found on the ATM at Grimaldi’s

Dumbo’s always-packed pizzeria Grimaldi’s has an ATM since it’s cash only, but the NYPD says that the iconic restaurant’s machine may have been compromised. A skimmer — a device that steals banking information from cards inserted into an ATM — was discovered on the machine last month and removed by the NYPD. No funds have been reported stolen, but officers are still looking for the person who put the skimmer on the ATM.

Critics head to Daigo Hand Roll Bar and Emma’s Torch

Ligaya Mishan at the Times takes a look at the affordable hand rolls served at Daigo Hand Roll Bar, located in the underground food hall DeKalb Market Hall in Downtown Brooklyn. The hand rolls, which are all less than $10, harken back to the simple sushi snacks of early 19th-century Edo, Mishan writes. Over in Carroll Gardens, Hannah Goldfield at the New Yorker highlights Emma’s Torch, a restaurant that also serves as a culinary training school for refugees. The menu changes often and features cuisines from all over the world, including the American South, the Middle East, and North Africa recently. Goldfield recommends attending one of the monthly graduation dinners, where trainees prepare dishes from their home countries.

Essex set to move across the street

Lower East Side restaurant and boozy brunch spot Essex has lived at 119 Rivington since 2000, but it will soon move across the street to 124 Rivington in the same building as dance and hookah bar La Caverna. Owner Dave Perlman notes that the move will happen in November and that the restaurant will not change otherwise.

An opening and a coming attraction

Viking Waffles, the company that retails protein-packed waffles in health-food stores and gyms, now has a little cafe in East Village at 137 Avenue C, near Ninth Street. Waffles come with various toppings. Midtown East sushi spot Dai Hachi will soon add an outpost in Long Island City at 46-18 Vernon Boulevard.

The Sosta’s series spotlighting female chefs continues

Fast-casual pasta joint from the By Chloe team The Sosta has tapped Egg Shop’s Sarah Schneider as the next chef in its guest chef series celebrating women. Schneider’s special dish for August is the “Sarah’s carbonara,” a $14 pasta made with sweet corn, crispy proscuitto, a poached egg, and parmigiano-reggiano.
