Popular British restaurant group D&D will enter the American market this September with the opening of Bluebird, a British brasserie in Columbus Circle with a former Bar Boulud and Epicerie Boulud chef at the helm.
Nicolas Houlbert will lead the kitchen at Bluebird, putting out dishes such as Cornish chicken pie, beef Wellington, and fish and chips. That’s alongside afternoon tea and plenty of gin at the bar. It’s definitely a focus on all things UK, though decidedly American elements shine through, too, like with its all-day offerings and DJ brunches.
Renderings below show a space that harks back to the London original in an Art Deco style. A cafe area is up front, integrating into the mall area, which then opens into the cocktail lounge and finally the dining room. All in all, it takes up over 10,000 square feet on the third floor.
D&D founders Des Gunewardena and David Loewi are pretty renowned in Britain, where Gunewardena is known as London’s “restaurant king”. They’ll soon have two restaurants in NYC, once their Hudson Yards restaurant opens in 2019.
