The team behind UWS favorite Jacob’s Pickles has opened a new fast-casual dumpling spot, just two doors up from owner Jacob Hadjigeorgis’ busy Southern comfort food restaurant, as first reported by West Side Rag. Located at 513 Amsterdam Ave., near West 85th street, Lucky Pickle Dumpling Co. comes from Hadjigeorgis and Maison Pickle executive chef Glenroy Brown.
The restaurant features limited counter-top seating for 15 in a small, industrial space with a wood ceiling, plenty of exposed lightbulbs, and a vintagey lightbox menu. There’s also a retail component, with wacky t-shirts for sale like one featuring a pig with a shrimp tail stabbing a pickle with a trident on one and another with a unicorn-pig hybrid stabbing a pickle with its horn.
The menu is small, featuring six types of dumpling, including vegan, spicy pork, chicken, and shrimp options. There are also three types of noodle on the menu — cold sesame noodles, dan dan noodles with spicy pork, and chicken noodle with garlic chips — with the option to get dumpling/noodle combos. And, of course, there are pickles, as well as a Sriracha pickle slaw.
While the menu is inspired by Hadjigeorgis’ visits to Hong Kong, it skews pan-Asian and pulls some influence from other parts of the world, too, as is the case for the country-style chicken broth in Brown’s chicken dumplings.
Jacob’s Pickles remains one of the Upper West Side’s most popular neighborhood restaurants, especially come weekend brunch time. Hadjigeorgis opened his first restaurants in Boston, but he’s from New York and has been gradually carving out a pickle empire on the UWS, first with Jacob’s Pickles and then with Maison Pickle, which opened in Tom Valenti’s former Ouest space in 2016.
Orders at Lucky Pickle Dumpling Co. are placed on a touch-screen device, a direction more fast-casual concepts, like Mediterranean joint Cava Grill, have been moving in lately. The restaurant is open Sunday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 a.m.
