Food celebrity Andrew Zimmern’s new Travel Channel show The Zimmern List hits NYC this week, and amNY has a look at all the places he’s planning to visit in town. For his trip here, the primary focus seems to be history: All of Zimmern’s New York City restaurant visits for the show are legends that have been around for years.
The episode looks at Besonhurst Sicilian pizza spot L&B Spumoni Gardens, Midwood pizzeria Di Fara, LES Jewish appetizing shop Russ & Daughters, pastrami king Katz’s Delicatessen, Chinatown dim sum restaurant Nom Wah Tea Parlor, roast duck restaurant Peking Duck House, and longtime oyster destination Grand Central Oyster Bar.
All of these restaurants have been around for decades, mostly run by the same families that opened them originally. They’re a dying breed in New York, and for Zimmern, visiting the first location is key. “I like the original locations for a whole variety of reasons, mostly having to do with the energy and the history that’s in the building,” he says. “You can feel those ghosts.”
Zimmern is best known as the host of Bizarre Foods, but The Zimmern List, which debuted in March, follows Zimmern as he talks about some of his favorite dishes and restaurants, with a particular look at the story behind the businesses. The series has already been to Austin, LA, and SF. The NYC episode airs on Tuesday on the Travel Channel.
