Emily and Matt Hyland — the husband-wife team behind pizza hits Emmy Squared and Emily — might be opening yet another East Village restaurant. The duo has applied for a new liquor license at 83 First Ave., at East Fifth Street in East Village, as first spotted by EV Grieve.
The space currently houses Italian restaurant Three Of Cups, which has been the neighborhood for over 25 years. But Three Of Cups, including its downstairs lounge, will close its doors come April 1, the owner announcing the closure on Facebook last night. According to SLA documents, the Hylands have applied for a liquor license at the bi-level space for a yet-to-be-named restaurant serving pizza and burgers.
A rep for Pizza Loves Emily, the Hylands’ burgeoning pizza empire that dishes out both thin wood-fired pies and rectangular pies made with a frico crust, tells Eater NY that the First Avenue space is being considered for a new location of Detroit-style pizza hit Emmy Squared, which currently does not have a presence in Manhattan.
In December, the duo also applied for another liquor license in the former GG’s space at 511 East Fifth St., between Avenues A and B. Although the team initially announced it would be a location of Emmy Squared that would open this spring, the rep now says that they may turn it into a totally different restaurant. Timeline, or more details, are not available for either new location.
The Hylands massive expansion plan seems to be in full swing, despite a lawsuit from investors claiming that the couple is cutting them out. (The suit was settled in November for an undisclosed amount; the Hylands did not admit fault.) Pizza Loves Emily recently made its first foray outside of NYC with the opening of Emmy Squared in Nashville, too. Eater NY has reached out for more information.
Update, 12:01 p.m.: This post has been updated to reflect that Pizza Loves Emily is considering the First Avenue space for a new Emmy Squared and the former GG’s space for a new restaurant concept.
