Famed Carnegie Deli returns for one-week pop-up
Iconic Jewish delicatessen Carnegie Deli will return for a one-week-long pop-up. From December 1 through 8 — just in time for Hanukkah — 201 Lafayette St. in Nolita will be open from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m., with everything on the menu under $1. Carnegie Deli closed to much agita in 2016 after 79 years in Midtown, and the restaurant’s famed overstuffed pastrami and corned beef sandwiches are now being used to promote season two of Amazon show Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, a period piece about a Jewish female comedian in 1950s New York City. All proceeds benefit the Lower East Side Girls Club; see the full menu and make reservations here.
Fire temporarily closes Bruno Pizza
A fire Friday morning has temporarily shuttered East Village restaurant Bruno Pizza. The fire broke out on the building’s top floor, with water damage affecting Bruno at 204 East 13th St. Plus, owner Demian Repucci tells EV Grieve that ConEd shut off electricity, gas, and water to the entire building. The length of closure is still unknown.
Another Taco Bell Cantina and a new coffee shop
Signage is up for a Taco Bell Cantina — the kind with alcohol — at 224 Seventh Ave. in Chelsea. That’s in addition to one headed to 840 Eighth Ave. in Midtown West. Over in the East Village, a coffee shop called Cocoa Grinder has opened at 45 East First St.
More legal troubles at uptown restaurant La Marina
A manager at La Marina has been busted for selling drugs at the uptown club. Christian Mendez, 33, was arrested last week and charged with seven counts of the criminal sale of a controlled substance, according to the New York Police Department. Mendez has been fired. This follows a temporarily closure last year by the Department of Health, a 2017 wage theft and sexual harassment lawsuit that was voluntarily dismissed to arbitration, and a 2016 City Hall corruption scandal in which co-owner Fernando Mateo tried to bribe Mayor Bill de Blasio.
