Best of luck getting free Ippudo
To celebrate its 10-year anniversary in NYC, ramen chain Ippudo will give away 1,000 bowls of free Japanese noodle soup on Tuesday. The featured dish will be the “ramen zero,” and it’ll be the only menu item served that day. It’s a strict one-bowl-per-guest policy for the giveaway happening Tuesday, October 16, at the restaurant’s East Village location at 65 Fourth Ave. The free food begins at 11 a.m., and the restaurant will close for the remainder of the day once the last bowl is served. — Carla Vianna
Pre-order a Daly Pie for Thanksgiving now
Following a battle with breast cancer, Daly Pie owner Meghan Daly is now fighting eviction from her Prospect Heights storefront. She fell behind on rent payments during her bout with breast cancer, and though her landlords have lowered the amount she owes and given her extra time to pay it, she must come up with $6,000 shortly. Daly is asking for people to pre-order their Thanksgiving pies now from the standout neighborhood shop.
An “Asian fusion tapas” bar heads to East Village
Restaurateurs David Massoni and John Bush have applied to open Black Emperor, an “Asian fusion tapas” bar at 197 Second Ave. in the old Schoolbred’s space, though not as part of their restaurant group Three Kings. The 35-seat space with a 10-seat bar would serve dishes such as squid tempura, fluke sashimi, and fried fish bao. Massoni and Bush are also behind Talde, Massoni, and Rice & Gold, run with chef Dale Talde. Talde, though, is not part of this project, as he is launching his own solo hospitality group.
Other openings, closings, and coming attractions
Newly opened Upper West Side Italian restaurant Il Gatto Nero has shuttered after just a few months, while downtown Essex Street Market’s Japanese fast food spot Osaka will also close, East Village Chinese restaurant Lumos Kitchen appears permanently shuttered, and Irish pub St. Dymphna’s will close after service on Saturday, October 20. In more positive news, the owners of Greek restaurant Merakia have opened a Greek taco spot called Greekito at 139 East 12th St. Plus, Montreal-based vegan chain Copper Branch is opening its first NYC outpost this November at 195 Bleecker St. Finally, take-out chicken joint Mister Chicken II is now open in Long Island City at 44-64 21st Street.
