Manhattanites will no longer have to endure the L to struggle through Smorgasburg’s packed crowd, long lines, and scarce seating: The outdoor food market opens in Hudson Square/Soho/Tribeca on August 19. Dubbed Smorg Square, founders Eric Demby and Jonathan Butler have taken over the 23,000 square-feet at the corner of Varick and Canal Streets for the viral novelty foods for which the market has become known.
This location — set to run for two years — will have about 20 vendors culled from the other locations, ample seating for 120 people, a full bar, and an outdoor deck. Standout vendors include Goa Taco, Lumpia Shack, Ramen Burger, Red Hook Lobster, and The Good Batch.
Smorg Square is only open Friday through Sunday, which is a change from the last time Demby talked about it as a new lunch option for nearby workers. Another new add: Sister market Brooklyn Flea will now be open year-round with 60 vendors across the street at 100 Avenue of the Americas. Come November, the two markets will synergize for holiday eating and shopping.
Smorg Square arrives August 19 and will be open Friday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m to 9 p.m. The full lineup is below.
