Via Carota Duo Plots All-Day Italian Cafe in the West Village

More unfussy Italian from these West Village hitmakers

West Village hitmakers Rita Sodi (I Sodi) and Jody Williams (Buvette) — together they own four-star Via Carota — are teaming up once again to open Pisellino, an all-day Italian cafe at 52 Grove Street. The idea is to channel casual cafes in Italy that serve as a stopover for coffee, snacks, and cocktails.

“Rita and I were driven a lot by nostalgia for places we long for from when we lived in Italy — places where you get your coffee or aperitif and move on your way,” Williams says. “We were missing that experience and had this opportunity to complement Via Carota right across the street.”

To that end, Pisellino (“sweet pea,” in Italian, as well as a more naughty slang meaning) will serve all day starting with pastries and “outstanding” coffee for breakfast, panini and snacks at lunch, all the way to bomboloni and cocktails at night.

Taking a cue from Williams and Sodi’s other spots, it will likely be a casually cool affair for unfussy food in a comfortable, buzzy room. It’s a small space — “You can hold it in the palm of your hand,” Williams says — with just 30 seats in the 800-square-foot space, plus sidewalk seating. But the idea is to provide all day long — 7 a.m. to 1 a.m. — in the tradition of cafes in Italy.

There’s no solid timeline quite yet for Pisellino, though Williams says it will be this year. Stay tuned for more.
