“Criminally under-appreciated chef” Jonathan Benno, who left Lincoln as head chef after six years back in March, will headline restaurants at The Evelyn Hotel in Nomad (7 E. 27th Street), where he’ll oversee the food and beverage program. Expect a high-profile restaurant called Benno, along with a casual restaurant, and a fast-casual restaurant — one of which may or may not offer pizza.
In addition to heading the kitchen at Lincoln, Benno’s impressive resume includes having been chef de cuisine at Per Se for six years, opening Craft beside Marco Canora, working under Tom Colicchio at Gramercy Tavern, out west for Thomas Keller at The French Laundry, and for Michael Mina.
StarChefs says that showcase restaurant Benno “will feature refined, classic Italian dishes. It will also expand Benno’s reach, in terms of diners fed and young cooks trained in the exacting standards that help propel and define his career” — a restaurant Benno has been talking about since before 2015.
Still, there’s a stretch before it opens, with an employee at the hotel saying it’ll be at least September and his spokesperson pointing to the beginning of 2018, since construction is only about to begin. In the meantime, the hotel has partnered with Black Barn a block away for dining. Stay tuned for updates as they roll in.
