Before they open their Nolita Indonesian restaurant at 20 Spring Street by the end of the year, Jean-Georges Vongerichten’s son Cedric and his wife Ochi — who’s Indonesian — will be opening a restaurant in Jakarta at the Alila Hotel.
"We are bringing American/French cuisine to Indonesia and then reversing it here,” Cedric says.
The younger Vongerichten says his new New York restaurant will be more casual than Perry Street where he has been chef de cuisine, but distinctly different from his father's Southeast Asian venture Spice Market. "That was really focused on street food from Singapore and Thailand,” he says. “This is going to be more specifically Indonesian, using a lot of seasonal products and putting my French twist on it.'' While Cedric will oversee the kitchen, Ochi will be in charge of the front of the house.
As for the location, he says he has an affinity for it. "I love that neighborhood. It's just two blocks east of Lafayette. I used to live there.'' They have yet to decide on a name for the restaurant. Stay tuned for details.
