Alan Cumming is getting into the nightlife game. The Good Wife actor is making excellent use of his surname to open Club Cumming, a performance-based club.
It’s opening in what’s now Eastern Bloc (505 E. 6th Street), where he’s teaming up with owners Benjamin Maisani and Darren Dryden as well as gay nightlife promoter Daniel Nardicio to convert it into his fantasy salon come September. Eastern Bloc will close in August.
Cumming’s rep tells Page Six it “will be a mixture of performance, DJs, [and] theme nights and as eclectic and unexpected as Alan himself ... Alan wants it to be a home for everyone of all ages, all genders, all sexualities, who all enjoy letting go and making some mischief. No judgments, no attitude, no rules, except kindness, acceptance and fun.”

Cumming first concocted Club Cumming in his Cabaret dressing room, where he put together a late-night hang with celebrity friends that featured his own branded cups and napkins, vegan soup, a Campari sponsorship, a neon sign, and even a doorman. He went so far as to collaborate with Fishs Eddy on a designed line for the concept, and even hosted versions in Los Angeles, New Orleans, and Edinburgh, Scotland.
While the closure of popular gay club Eastern Bloc will cause some sadness and outrage, Out magazine reports that Club Cumming will still be a very gay-friendly gathering space. Nardicio assures the magazine: “We want to make things more chic, like a Kit Kat Club-style dressing room and a bathroom redone by a major cosmetics firm. And we’ll bring back Reading For Filth, the reading series Brian Butterick did, as well as having all sorts of live performances, like Brian Newman, who’s Lady Gaga’s trumpet player/jazz band leader, and hopefully Amanda Lepore’s CD release party.”
Cumming is hardly the first celebrity to spawn an NYC restaurant or bar. Gwyneth Paltrow recently opened a health-centric cafe called 3 Green Hearts, not to mention Robert De Niro’s Tribeca Grill, Locanda Verde, and Nobu; Hugh Jackman’s Laughing Man Coffee Shop; Susan Sarandon’s SPiN; Jay Z’s 40/40 Club, and more.
