SantaCon’s back this weekend
Drunk bros decked out in holiday gear will pack the streets from East Village to Midtown on Saturday for the annual shitshow called SantaCon. A full rundown of the 50-or-so bars that the pub crawl will be hitting can be seen on this website. Every year, participants in the crawl donate some money to charity, but that’s never quite been enough to combat its image as a menace to New York City streets. This year, an ad agency even used its bad rep to run an #SitOutSantaCon campaign.
After 10 years, TK Kitchen closes, plus other closings and coming attractions
St. Mark’s Taiwanese restaurant TK Kitchen is closing after service on Sunday after 10 years in the East Village. It served bubble tea, popcorn chicken, noodles, and other Taiwanese fare. The owners say they have a new idea in the works. Elsewhere in the neighborhood, cafe Stuyvesant Organic has closed but looks like it will soon be a dumpling restaurant. And over in Bushwick, coffee roaster Supercrown has closed after two years.
Ligaya Mishan’s top 10 cheap eats of the year
The Times’ Hungry City columnist Ligaya Mishan lists the best cheap eats she’s had all year, praising the foods around the world that end up in New York City. Topping the list is the Queens Night Market stalls, which offers food ranging from Malaysian burgers to Nigerian jollof rice. Also on the list: Indonesian grocery Warung Selasa, Taiwanese xiao chi restaurant Mama Lee, and Tama, a Bed-Stuy Filipino restaurant.
Popular outdoor Ridgewood bar Nowadays winterizes
Sprawling outdoor Ridgewood bar Nowadays opens a winter-friendly restaurant and bar today, called Indoor at Nowadays. The 5,000-square-foot space at 56-06 Cooper Avenue will have a restaurant called Purslane, as well as a dance floor. Expect sandwiches, bowls, and snacks, including turmeric popcorn, and a ground lamb-based bowl with chickpeas and golden beets. Brunch will be available on weekends, and happy hour will have two-for-one cocktails.
