Top Chicago restaurant Publican cooks in NYC Thursday
The men behind Chicago restaurant Publican — one of the country’s essential restaurants — will be in Brooklyn on Thursday night only, serving dishes such as barbecued tripe with clams, barbecued carrots, and ham chop in hay. Publican chefs Paul Kahan and Cosmo Goss will be at Prospect Heights restaurant Olmsted for the event, which is in honor of their new cookbook Cheers to the Publican: Repast and Present. Reservations are available here.
Hwa Yuan revival nails the cold sesame noodles, critic says
Post critic Steve Cuozzo visits the revival of legendary Chinese restaurant Hwa Yuan and finds that the cold sesame noodles he loved from the original have returned in sharp form. They’re “almost precisely to the original,” Cuozzo writes — though he says they could use a bit more chile. Cuozzo also enjoyed a Grand Marnier prawn dish.
Nom Wah Tu puts dine-and-dasher on blast
The Nom Wah empire’s modern full-service sibling Nom Wah Tu apparently has had some unkind diners. The restaurant posted a video yesterday of people who ate and then left without paying. “Watch out LES,” the post says. “Dine & Dashers on the loose. If you know these punks let them know they can come back and pay for their meal any time.”
High Street on Hudson gets a new chef
Philly import High Street on Hudson now has a new executive chef, Sean McPaul — an alum of Ludlow House, Upland, and celebrated Philly restaurant Talula’s Garden, where restaurant co-owners Eli Kulp and Ellen Yin first met him. McPaul will be adding pastas to the menu, including a squid ink malfadine and a spaghetti with charred cherry tomato.
An all-star Roman collaboration
Famed Roman pizza chef Stefano Callegari — the inventor of the street snack Trapizzino — is in town next week and will be hooking up for an event with Nick Anderer, the chef behind Danny Meyer outfit Marta. Anderer studied under Callegari, and on Monday, October 16 the two will be cooking together at East Village fast-casual Roman pizzeria Martina. From 5 p.m. to 11 p.m., the restaurant will serve specials like a cacio e pepe pie with Brussels sprouts and saltimbocca, a proscuitto-wrapped veal dish.
A cider tap room
Later this month, a bar specializing in cider will be opening in Crown Heights. Bad Seed Brooklyn, located at 585 Franklin Avenue, will open its doors on October 20. The bar will offer 20 taps with craft beer and cider from the Bad Seed, a company that uses fruit from New York state. If that’s too long to wait, check out how to make a gin cider cocktail that’s perfect for fall below.
Cocktails for a cause
A slew of Mexican chefs and mixologists in New York are getting together to raise money for schools in Mexico that were damaged by earthquakes. Minimum donation to attend the event on Friday in Brooklyn is $100, with 100 percent of the proceeds going toward an organization called Global School Spirit.
