Triple Breaking: Michelle Obama Lunches at Mario Batali’s Babbo

Yet another amazing dining choice from a member of the First Family

Earlier this afternoon, Waverly Place was crawling with secret service agents because First Lady Michelle Obama made the excellent decision to have lunch at Mario Batali and Joe Bastianch’s Greenwich Village classic, Babbo. A reservationist at the restaurant confirms that the First Lady recently departed from the restaurant, although the team did not want to divulge any details about what she ate for lunch. Hopefully, Michelle enjoyed some dishes that incorporated late summer produce, because the team at Babbo has a graceful touch with seasonal fruits and vegetables. Perhaps Obama sampled from the four-course lunch tasting, which includes sweet corn sformato and guinea hen with summer squash. Or maybe she tried a few pastas, like the poark quadretti with chanterelles, or the black spaghetti with fennel and bottarga. Lunch is definitely the way to go at Babbo.

The Obamas have impeccable taste in New York City restaurants. Two nights ago, they dined at Mexican trailblazer Cosme. Seven years ago, on their first date night in office, they went to Blue Hill. Over the intervening years, Michelle has also appeared in the dining rooms of Gramercy Tavern, the original Grimaldi’s, and Peasant.

The President and the First Lady were in town this week for the U.N. General Assembly. If you hear anything about future presidential dining choices, please remember that the tipline is always open.
