The Duo Behind Brooklyn Kolache Opens Filipino Taco Restaurant Swell Dive

Spam tacos arrive in Bed-Stuy

Robert Sietsema

Over the weekend, Brooklyn Kolache Co. owners Dennis Mendoza and Autumn Stanford quietly opened Swell Dive at 1013 Bedford Avenue. This non-traditional taqueria will pay homage to both of their backgrounds: Mendoza is from the Philippines, and Stanford from Texas. Currently, the restaurant is open daily from 5:00 p.m. until 2:00 a.m., with plans to extend to breakfast.

Robert Sietsema stopped by this week and was pleased to find the new restaurant up-and-running. He writes: "Tacos are pretty good. More Filipino than Tex-Mex with fillings like fried spam, sisig, spicy braised beef, and fried cheese." Other taco options include chicken adobo, smoked pork, grilled slab cheese, and charred beef, all on housemade tortillas. The team is also offering mango coolers and fishbowl punches. Have you stopped by already? Be sure to let us know what you think.
