— La Colombe opened its first café in Chelsea this morning in the Terminal Warehouse at 601 W. 27th St. It marks the sixth location of the budding coffee chain in NYC.
— Strip House executive Chef Michael Vignola will serve a "Scotchy Scotch steak dinner" at the James Beard House on Saturday, May 21. The chef will prepare a five course dinner to be paired with a selection of Scotch from the Glenrothes Distillery. Tickets are $130 for members, $170 for the general public.
— A teenage tearaway posed as a police informant in an effort to evade payment for a burger and a couple of beers at Park Slope restaurant Burger Village. Rather than dining and dashing, the enterprising alleged criminal instead tried to extort the food by daring the bar manager to call the police after revealing his underage status. The manager called his bluff.
— The Lower East Side and East Village Community Board 3 wants to ban all new liquor licenses that are within 500 feet of an existing license. They want diversity in retail instead of just bars. The board's vote is advisory to the State Liquor Authority, which makes the ultimate decision.
— There are signs of spring at Faro in Brooklyn. Chef/Co-owner Kevin Adey has completely overhauled the menu with the "arrival of spring’s bounty" and highlights "ramps, morels, pea shoots, lavender, and dandelion greens." Dishes include a sweet pea agnolotti and ricotta gnocchi with ramps:
