Paulie Giannone — the man behind popular Greenpoint pizzeria Paulie Gee's — is opening another pizza place in the neighborhood, this time with classic New York slices. Paulie Gee's Slice Joint, to be located at 110 Franklin St. at the corner of Noble, will be an old school New York pizzeria and sports bar, Giannone tells Eater. His flagship pizzeria stopped doing takeout a couple years ago because the pies didn't hold up well in a box, so this new restaurant is an opportunity to serve people who want to take something home, he says. "There's a big demand in the neighborhood," Giannone says.
Although Paulie Gee's is known for its creative pies, the pizzas at the Slice Joint will be simple. Expected flavors include plain, pepperoni, white, and upside-down Sicilian pizzas, though Giannone may offer a few vegan pies as well. The restaurant will also serve wine and beer at a bar, in a raw industrial-like space. "The spirit is an old '60s New York slice joint," Giannone says. He even got some old, bright orange booths from a pizzeria in New Jersey that his kids used to frequent. Longtime Paulie Gee's employee Andrew Brown will be running the restaurant, which is expected to open later this year. See the image of Giannone's booths below, and stay tuned for updates as the project progresses.
