Scenes From a Fish and Pickles Packed Morning at Russ & Daughters Cafe

Welcome to the breakfast edition of our photo series Eater Scenes, where Eater photographer Daniel Krieger visits some of the city's great restaurants to capture them at a certain, and very specific time.

The more than 100-year-old appetizing store Russ & Daughters opened its first sit-down cafe just a couple years ago, and since then, it's been a destination for sampling the company's renowned smoked fish, pickled herring, and caviar. Russ & Daughters is growing considerably beyond that too, with plans to open a restaurant in the Jewish Museum next week and a huge manufacturing center in Brooklyn Navy Yard next year. Recently, the cafe also started serving its own baked goods for the first time, including bagels, babka, and black and white cookies. Photographer Daniel Krieger visited on a recent Saturday morning to capture the action, from slicing fish to making egg creams.
