Julieta Ballesteros, who has appeared as a contestant on Iron Chef, and served as chef at Crema in Chelsea for ten years before running the kitchen at La Loteria in the West Village, is opening her own restaurant along with partner Francisco Decrescenzo. Tavo, which is due to open at the end of the week at 615 Hudson Street, will have 62 seats and serve contemporary American fare with Latin influences. A cocktail lounge will feature such creative libations as Formal Attire Required, which contains Bulleit rye, activated charcoal, smoked maple syrup, Meyer lemon, egg white, raspberries and Angostura bitters. The menu will include empanadas, mofongo cakes, "deviled corn chow fun," Peking duck "carnitas" for two, and a kobe beef burger. Stay tuned for more details as they become available.
