Fall Frenzy: Babbo Acquires a King’s Ransom of White Truffles

The pricy Italian truffles have arrived at Mario Batali’s Greenwich Village classic

[Babbo by Daniel Krieger]

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, mere hours ago we crossed over into what is without a doubt the greatest season to be a diner in New York City. The white truffles have arrived at Babbo which means that we are firmly entrenched in autumn in New York, a season so nice that Hollywood made a movie about it starring Richard Gere and Winona Ryder. This is, of course, a time to enjoy things like roasted delicata squash and creamy chestnut soup. But more importantly, it’s the window of time when many of NYC’s greatest restaurants will bury your pasta, risotto, or chicken under a pile of earthy, funky imported truffle flakes.

Babbo is traditionally one of the first restaurants out of the truffle-scented gate each year. Tonight, the restaurant is offering beef carpaccio, gnocchi with duck egg, and fresh pappardelle with white truffles, but the funky flakes can also be added to any dish upon request, if you're willing to fork over the extra cash. Stay tuned fore more updates on Truffle Mania 2016, and if you happen to see these fancy fungi on any menus around NYC, please let us know.
