In a note to customers posted on the gate, owner Talitha Widbee explains that Champion closed this week "due to some unforeseen circumstances." The good news is that the excellent nine-year-old cafe will reopen in a space directly across the street at 1107 Manhattan Avenue, right next to La Fanfare. Widbee tells Eater: "The new location is approximately 1800 square feet, so think flagship store. The menu will stay the same with a few additional drinks."

Champion is also getting a sister shop at 142 Nassau Avenue in September, and the Gansevoort Market outpost is still going strong. If everything goes according to plan, the new and improved Manhattan Avenue Champion will open in November.
Here's the full statement about the closure from owner Talitha Widbee:
Dear Champions
Due to some unforeseen circumstances we have decided to close this
location of Champion Coffee. You are always welcome at our Meatpacking
location at the Gansevoort Market as well as at our new Greenpoint location
located at 142 Nassau Avenue opening September 18th, and our flagship
location opening directly across the street at 1107 Manhattan avenue slated
to open in November. We are greatly saddened by this situation and look
forward to seeing all of you in the fall with an even more exciting space.
Thank you for the best more than 9 years that any café could have hoped
With great love for all of you
Talitha Whidbee and the rest of the Champion Crew
