Take a look around Bruno Pizza, now open in the East Village. The restaurant from Demian Repucci and Roberta's / Acme / Box Kite alums Justin Slojkowski and Dave Gulino is named after Giordano Bruno, a Dominican Friar who was burned at the stake for heresy in 1600. The name indicates that a Neapolitan purist may be somewhat aghast at the pizza combinations that will emerge from the oven. Repucci who has an architecture and design background, designed the space and also ended up building much of it himself. He happens to be a James Beard Award winner for his work at Blackbird in Chicago back in 2002.
The menu is limited for now, with three pizzas, two pastas, and a selection of salads, with new dishes being added daily. A beer and wine license is imminent but for now it is BYOB. Bruno is open from 6:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
