Permanent Shutters:
BROOKLYN HEIGHTS — Western restaurant Grand Canyon has closed. Outside, there's a sign that says "Grand Canyon is CLOSING. We thank you for 32 years of support," notes Brooklyn Heights Blog.
NOLITA — Spanish spot La Churreria served its last heart-shaped churro and cooled its friers. The owners are installing a new concept in the space, reports Bedford + Bowery.
UPPER EAST SIDE — Sushi spot Tatany 72 is done. All the menus in the window are down and "the place looks abandoned," writes a tipster. The phone has also been disconnected.
Temporary Shutter:
TRIBECA — Church Street Tavern isn't even a year old, and it's already on hiatus. The team closed, ostensibly for two weeks this month, but a new sign in the window says "Church St Tavern will remain closed through August 31 while we revamp our Kitchen and Lounge Area... Please join us this Fall, for an exciting New Look & New Menu but the same old burger...," says Tribeca Citizen. The restaurant, and it's downstairs "speakeasy" Bandits Roost ran into some trouble with neighbors and the DOB last fall, but managed to come out of it alive. That space, however, has been a challenging one for quite a while, previously housing the ill-fated Bisoturo and Tribeca Canvas. Perhaps, the team will come back. We'll have to wait until Labor Day and see.
