Boerum Hill Favorite Building on Bond Owners Opening Cocktail Bar Next Door

New, 2 comments

There will be a serious music program and a 1970's juke box.

Tip Line

The team behind Boerum Hill's seven-year old coffee shop/community center/bar Building on Bond is opening a cocktail bar next door — and quickly. Co-owner Phil Morgan says it will be open come late August. He's not exactly starting from square one. Until recently, the space was an office for his and fellow Building on Bond owner John Kole's restaurant design and construction firm Hecho Inc. (Red Hook Lobster Pound, Stanton Social, Beauty & Essex), so the pair definitely has some experience with this sort of thing.

Morgan is physically doing much of the work to change over the space, helping install a bar made from old wooden gym bleachers (yes, like the ones you watch a high school basketball game on), 1960's tile, brass doors, and a sort of backdoor connection to Building on Bond. He says the bar's name isn't quite set and the head bartender's name is still underwraps, but there will be seating for about 35 people and a seriously curated music program with DJs and a vintage jukebox from the 1970's that plays 45s.

Boerum Hill has never been much of a place for cocktail bars, but that's started to change lately. First, with Livingston Manor, and more recently with Grand Army. So, just how thirsty is the tree-lined neighborhood?
