Stromboli, East Village
Open until 4:30 a.m., seven days
83 St Marks Place, (212) 673-3691
Twenty years ago you might have seen the Beastie Boys or Iggy Pop feasting in Stromboli, a decades-old pizzeria (since at least 1970) at the iconic corner of St. Marks and 1st Ave in the East Village. It has long been a refuge for bands that, having finished their gigs at nearby rock clubs as late as 3:30 a.m. or so, are looking for something fast and hot. The thin-crust pizza has just a little sugar in the sauce, and the eponymous stromboli (Sicilian pizza rolls) are also tasty. The plain cheese slice is one of my favorites in town, with just the right ratio of cheese to sauce (approximately 1:2).
