Vegan Mainstay Tiengarden Serves Its Final Supper Tonight After 20 Years on the LES

Rising rent and low foot traffic on Allen Street is forcing the shutter.

Asian-inspired vegan mainstay Tiengarden is closing today after 20 years on Allen Street, reported The Lo-Down yesterday. "It's been a struggle, it's a very quiet street," manager Michael Knight told DNAinfo. On top of the lack of foot traffic, the landlord tripled the rent, raising it to $10,000 a month. "It's just those factors combined — the rent's going up, it's not a busy street. We've had our fun," Knight added. The restaurant will close at 5 p.m. for a final staff meal. Just a neighborhood north, Vietnamese vegan restaurant Lan Cafe, served its last meal a week ago.
