Wylie Dufresne Unlikely to Reopen wd~50, But Promises New Restaurants

Still, the modernist chef misses his iconic restaurant "on a daily basis."

Daniel Krieger

When Wylie Dufresne closed wd~50 late last year, there were tears and promises that the iconic restaurant, though maybe in a different form, would return. The modernist mad man seems to be rethinking that now. Dufresne tells the Chronicle Journal that he's "very sentimental" about wd~50 and misses it "on a daily basis," but that doesn't mean he's necessarily working towards restaurant reincarnation. "I would love to continue opening restaurants and do more things. I can't say if you'll see wd~50 again, but I would like to say that you'll certainly see more restaurants from us; fingers crossed, knock on wood, all those wishful thinkings." In the meantime, he's changed over the menu at Alder, serving a prix fixe format in the dining room and a bar menu up front.
