Despite a Michelin recommendation, the Icelandic restaurant Skal on the east end of Canal Street looks like it's down for the count. The restaurant opened about 18 months ago, but lost its original chef Ben Spiegel less than a year in. Critics enjoyed the food from his replacement James Kim, but the restaurant never seemed to build a strong following among diners. There's nothing about the shutter on the restaurant's social media accounts, but Bowery Boogie notes that the space has been dark for over a week, including the weekend. With the expansion of Dimes and Pies 'N' Thighs, not to mention the success of Mission Chinese Food just down the block, the space likely won't sit empty for long.
