Mitali East Closes After 40 Years; Kabin Bar Is Done

The East Village loses an Indian restaurant that's been open since the 1970's and a decade-old a sushi shack.

East Village: Little India lost one of its classics this week. Mitali East, which has been serving strong chana saag and giant uthapams for 40 years in a subterranean space on East 6th Street has shuttered, reports EV Grieve.

Tribeca: Washington Market Tavern is shuttering after eight months on Murray Street, reports Tribeca Citizen. Rumor has it that restaurateur Eric Schwimmer, who also owns Mudville 9, might be opening a new restaurant in the space.

East Village: After over a decade of business, Kabin Bar & Lounge has called it quits, notes Bowery Boogie. The drink specials and the free comedy shows — not to mention the wacky exterior — will be missed.

East Village: Ginger, the tiny sushi spot on First Ave has closed after ten years of business. An EV Grieve tipster says that "a rent hike wasn't to blame for the closure...rather the owners decided to sell the business for family reasons."

Upper West Side: Red Stone Cafe didn't last more than a few months, according to an employee. [West Side Rag]
