The old school dive bar has a new lease on life in the guise of a modern cocktail lounge.

When East Village dive bar Holiday Cocktail Lounge shuttered back in 2012 after the building was sold, its future was uncertain. But now it's back, under the stewardship of La Palapa owner Barbara Sibley and Robert Ehrlich, the creator of Pirate's Booty snacks, with the bar program is being run by brothers Michael and Danny Neff, of Ward III and Extra Fancy, respectively. While the cocktail menu is decidedly more upmarket than it used to be, there are still some good cheap drinks to be found, like $5 Genesee ales, and an $8 beer and shot combo. The important design elements of the bar, such as the awning and horseshoe bar have been retained, while the rest has been spruced up a bit. A mural that reportedly dates back to the 1920's when the bar was called Ali Baba Lounge, discovered during the renovations, has also been restored. For now, only a limited food menu is available while the kitchen waits for the gas to get turned on, but eventually look for a menu built on ingredients "foraged" from local East Village shops.
