Matt Piacentini, who owned the gone-but-not-forgotten bar The Beagle, is making his official return to the NYC bar scene tonight with his cocktail den The Up & Up in Greenwich Village. He and head bartender Chaim Dauermann (formerly of Gin Palace and Desnuda Williamsburg) have put together a menu that ranges from Miller High Life to cocktail bottle service with drinks like The Messier Manhattan, named for Max Messier, who the menu describes as a "much-ballyhooed bartender and syrup maker in New Orleans." There are also a few halfies (to put that in layman's terms, very small cocktails) and lots of regular old cocktails like the Rose Among Thorns (Citadelle Gin, Krogstad Aquavit, Montenegro, dry vermouth, and orange bitters). On the food front, find a small selection of snacks like pickled vegetables and chicken liver mousse, all served with baguette.
