After eight years working with Joe Campanale and the Epicurean Management team, executive chef/partner Gabe Thompson
has left the group, Grub Street reports [See update below]. No word yet on where he's headed or who will replace him, but it sounds like the chef is leaving the city. Presumably, Thompson's wife and collaborator, pastry chef Katherine Thompson, has also left the company.
The Thompsons' rustic Italian fare earned many raves from the critics over the years. Gabe kicked off his partnership with Campanale at Dell'Anima in the West Village. After that the team opened L'Artusi, Anfora, and L'Apicio. The group also operated a seasonal outdoor lounge called Alta Linea at the High Line Hotel. Gabe Thompson's lips are sealed right now, but it sounds like this was an amicable split. He also hints at another project on the horizon. Eater has reached out to the Epicurean camp for more details on his replacement. Stay tuned for updates as they become available.
UPDATE: Gabe Thompson is still finishing up his tenure at Epicurean. According to a rep, he'll be with the group through the majority of November. In a statement, Gabe notes: "After over eight years with Epicurean Group working alongside some of my dearest friends, my family and I have made the decision to relocate. It has been an honor to be a part of this family of restaurants, and so proud of the serious talent that has risen through the ranks and now leads each restaurant." And Joe Campanale also remarks: "Though we will be taking a break from our professional relationship, I will continue to be close friends with him and his extremely talented wife Katherine and look forward to seeing what they're up to next!"
Stay tuned for more details on Thompson's next move as they become available.
