In a newsletter sent to fans and customers this week, SCRATCHbread baker/owner Matt Tilden announces the imminent closure of his five-year-old Bed-Stuy bakery. Tilden writes: "This thing created opportunities, supported so many now, I've got more debt than 3 lifetimes." The baker also notes that "just one investor would have changed everything." SCRATCHbread's last day will be October 11. During it short lifespan, the bakery earned praise from bloggers for its breakfast pastries, egg sandwiches, and pizza breads.
