Seamus Mullen's El Colmado Butchery to Close After Service on October 14

The ambitious butcher shop/bar/restaurant didn't take off the way that the chef had hoped.

Although the restaurant received praise for its tapas, steaks, and burger, Seamus Mullen has decided to close his seven-month-old Meatpacking District project El Colmado Butchery. In a statement about the closure, Mullen notes: "It was not an easy decision to make, but a necessary one to make for our business at this time. We are grateful for the support of our partners at Brass Monkey and the opportunity to create something we believe was truly special for the neighborhood." The restaurant will close for good after service on Wednesday, October 14.

With the recent opening of The Whitney on Gansevoort Street, the Meatpacking District is more popular than ever. But, unfortunately, El Colmado is located in the middle of a stretch of Little West 12th Street that doesn't get as much foot traffic as other patches of the neighborhood. Mullen notes: "We were excited to contribute in our own small way to the continued growth of the Meatpacking District and its culinary evolution, along with our fantastic neighbors such as Santina, Untitled, Gansevoort Market, and others." Mullen still operates Tertulia in the West Village and El Colmado in Gotham West Market.

Rumor has it that April Bloomfield and her crew might be eyeing that address for a future project. Eater has reached out to her team, but no word yet on whether or not a deal is in the works. Stay tuned for more updates as they become available.
