Michael Avila, a Bushwick native who opened The Coffee Shop July and then posted an anti-semitic tirade on his Instagram in October, has shuttered his shop. In his post, Avila slammed Jews for buying up the neighborhood and said they "function via greed and dominance." After the ensuing backlash, he tried to backpedal by posting photos of Jews he liked. When that, unsurprisingly, failed to appease anyone, he folded all of his social media accounts, offering his "deep and sincere apologies." Despite the incident, the shop managed to pull through and stay open until around Christmas when Avila apparently threw in the towel. A sign in the window says the cafe will reopen this spring under new management.
