There's a rumor floating around that Yonnah Schimmel Knish Bakery, the knishery that has sat relatively unchanged on Houston Street since 1910, may be pushed out by a rent hike. As word on the street has it, the landlord is actively trying to get rid of the ancient cafe. There's not much to substantiate the rumor yet, but according to Bowery Boogie it's been swirling for some time now, and has recently "intensified."
So far, Yonah Schimmel denies the rumors, but recently told Bowery Boogie that it was looking for investors and hoping to expand. But one never knows with these things. If there is any truth to these rumors, it would be a huge loss for the neighborhood. Not only is it a Houston Street landmark, it's also one of the last remaining kosher establishments in the area, following the closure of the last full-service kosher restaurant on the Lower East Side.
