Cinnamon Snail and Calexico Triumph at Vendy Awards

New, 3 comments

The annual Emmys of the street food world, the Vendy Awards celebrated its 10th anniversary this weekend with a big gathering of food trucks on Governor's Island. Despite a bit of rain, guests seemed to have a good time sampling food from the nominees and previous favorites and winners like Solber Pupusas, King of Falafel, and NY Dosa. Awards were given in seven categories, here's who took home the gold:

Baare Batchiri won the Hero of the Year award for helping the NYPD apprehend a criminal after being stabbed while working his table in Soho. Zhà Pan Asian won for best market vendor for its Asian takes on Italian arancini like Thai curry and Korean fried rice balls. Best Dessert went to experimental ice cream pop-up Ice & Vice and Rookie of the Year went to the Snowday Truck, which just opened a brick and mortar location in the East Village selling its shaved frozen cream. Last year's Rookie of the Year, Nuchas Empanadas took home the People's Choice Award and Calexico won the Masters Cup. Finally, vegan lunch favorite Cinnamon Snack took home the big prize of the day, the Vendy Cup.
