Fall restaurant season is almost here and new details are coming in fast. First up, New York Magazine reports that Alex Stupak's newest project, which he calls a bar and a tortilleria, will be called Empellón al Pastor. When it opens next month, the spot will specialize in (surprise, surprise) tacos al pastor served on house made corn tortillas. There will also be a handful of other taco options, five sides, guacamole, and Micheladas. This is going to be a real departure from the high end style of the other two Empellóns (Cocina and Taqueria): Stupak plans to have counter service, and to serve everything on paper plates. Meanwhile, here are a couple more updates for fall:
The Torrisi team is finally throwing a bone to those who prefer lighter fare. At their restaurant in the new downtown location near the High Line, "There will be a huge emphasis on fish and vegetables…And almost no meat," explains partner Jeff Zalaznick. The menu includes a grilled whole porgy, anchovies cured in house and zucchini carpaccio. The restaurant will have seating for 100 inside, plus another 50 outdoors, and is set to open in October.
Finally, Andrew Carmellini's project at the Smyth has a name: Little Park. It will open in November.
