Fall of an Empire

crumbs-thumb-72114.jpgWhen Crumbs abruptly shuttered all of its locations in early July, more than 800 employees were laid off. But the crumbling empire had a greater ripple effect. Melita, a South Bronx company contracted to make hundreds of thousands of cupcakes for Crumbs each week, was forced to lay-off 75 employees and is still owed $100,000. And it was still baking off extra batter even after Crumbs closed. [WSJ]
