OpenTable is launching an app for mobile payment at over 45 restaurants in New York today including Il Buco Alimentari, Pearl & Ash, and Tamarind Tribeca. The app, which was tested out in the San Francisco restaurant scene is slated to launch in 20 cities by the end of the year. It allows diners to pay their bill (and the tip) on their phone without having to wait for a server to drop the bill or swipe their card. At the moment, the biggest flaw is that diners can't split the check, but a representative says that that function will likely be added "down the pipe."
OpenTable is not the first to get into the mobile payment game in NYC: Cover lets diners pay the bill, and divide it, at restaurants like Estela, Charlie Bird, and ZZ's Clam Bar. Another app called Dash starting testing last year, and now provides a similar service to OpenTable's for a handful of restaurants in Manhattan.
