The long-troubled TGI Fridays in Union Square is finally set to close, as the building goes on the market. "Union Square is so hot down there these days with real quality restaurants it just doesn't compete well," explains operator Dennis Riese. The space purportedly went on the market last fall, but looks like it was later taken off.
But even as Union Square proves too tough a crowd, Riese is contemplating opening several "neighborhoody" TGI Fridays in other areas. The first would be in a large restaurant complex on 34th Street in Murray Hill, which would also play host to an outpost of L.A. based burger chain FatBurger. Riese expects to be greeted without resistance from locals there, since "We're not a nightclub business."
